How the ranking works

Each route gets an editorial rating from 1 to 5 on six priorities, based on how a typical program on that route works. Your sliders set how much each priority counts. A route’s fit is its weighted score as a share of the best possible score.

The two hard limits adjust the ranking: needing a full-time income lowers routes that are hard to combine with full-time work (apprenticeships pay you, so they aren’t lowered), and needing a bachelor’s degree lowers routes that don’t lead to one.

What it can’t tell you: individual programs vary far more than these averages. A part-time online bachelor’s degree is more flexible than the rating suggests; a competitive apprenticeship may be harder to get into than any community college. Use the ranking to decide which routes to research, then compare real programs with the Program Comparison Worksheet.
